Yeast Infections Complication in Women

    Yeast infections are often caused by existence of yeast that is present in low numbers in the vagina, digestive tract, skin, bowels or mouth. Pregnancy, antibiotics and frequent exposures to semen may lead to an overgrowth of these organisms that cause infection.

    What is Yeast infection?
    Vaginal yeast infection, also known as candidiasis is caused due to the overgrowth of an organism called candida albicans. The evidence of this kind of fungus is often found in vagina in small numbers.

    How does one get a yeast infection?
    Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of yeast that is often present in small quantities in the vagina. Pregnancy, antibiotics and frequent exposure to semen over a short period of time can all lead to an overgrowth of these organisms.

    Symptoms of yeast infection vary from woman to woman from mild to severe and include:

    Itching and irritation in vagina
    Painful urination
    Pain during or after sexual intercourse
    Unusually white and thick vaginal discharge
    Swelling and redness in vuvla

    The gastrointestinal tract is the source of chronic candida yeast growth. The infection is often passed through sexual contact, though intercourse with an infected partner is not always responsible for it.

    Yeast overgrowth often is the result of fatigue, high stress and hormonal fluctuations during menstrual cycle, menopause, poor diet, use of hygiene products, wearing clothes or underwear with poor ventilation and use of broad spectrum antibiotics.

    Diagnosis of Yeast Infections
    A proper diagnosis can be done by observing the vaginal discharge under a microscope. The yeast forms and the skin changes of the vagina are observed to detect the infection.

    It is important to make a correct diagnosis as the symptoms of candida albicans often resemble those of bacteria and other sexually transmitted diseases.

    Yeast Infection Treatment Options
    A variety of treatments are available from a single dose treatment to a course of treatment ranging from 3-5 days. They come in form of:

    Antifungal creams
    Antifungal suppositories
    Antifungal tablets
    Most of these medicines contain Butoconazole, Clotrimazole, Diflucan, Nizoral, Terazol, Vagistat and Yeast No More etc. However, these medicines should not be used without consulting a qualified doctor.

    To cure acute and chronic yeast infections, a change in diet plan is necessary. It includes:

    Fresh fruits and vegetables
    Fish and poultry
    Whole grains
